Every time you want to find something on the internet, you use search engine. You open up you favourite search engine and type in the relevant words. Have you ever wondered, what exactly happens when you click on search.
Suppose that you searched for flash tutorials, the search engine will give out pages:
- That contain the exact phrase “flash tutorials”.
- That contain flash and tutorials in close proximity.
- That contain flash and tutorials somewhere in the same page.
- That contain a link, with the link being the phrase flash tutorials.
- That contain a link, with the link containing words flash and tutorials; but not in close proximity.
When a search engine gives out the results, it checks if the searched word is in:
- Bold text
- Italics text
- Heading text
- Bulleted list
None of these may be in the same order as listed above. But one thing is sure, if the searched words are not related to your website (Even if your website is for flash tutorials) by the search engine, then your site may never show up in ranking.
For eg: your website for flash tutorials will never show up in rankings for someone searching for html tutorials, atleast not in the top results where the user searches for the correct result.Maybe after the search engine has exhausted its reserve for html tutorials, it might show websites having flash tutorials in them, but this might be after a few hundred or thousand results. And no user is going to go beyond top 20 results after which they begin a new search.
Search Engine Optimization is absolutely useless if you are not selecting the right keywords for your website. Keyword selection, rather correct keyword selection is a important process and can make or break your website in the rankings.
